Danbury Motorcaravans Spring Open Weekend 2018

March 12, 2018

Danbury Motorcaravans are holding their Spring 2018 Open Weekend on March 17-18th at their headquarters in England. If you’re in the U.K. and near Bristol this would be a lot of fun. If I could be there I’d seriously be looking at this bad boy, a 2012 VW T2 Rio. Although it is counter to my air-cooled sensibilities I must admit it is one cool ride. Hmm, I think I’d add a roof rack over the cab. I imagine the interior is what VW Westfalia conversions would have evolved to had our German friends been allowed to continue the manufacture of bay window buses post 1979. (this being a 2012 water-cooled T2 from Brazil)

From their newsletter:  “Join us for our Spring Open Weekend, at our Bristol HQ, where you can view our full range of Danbury Campervans and also join in with some family-fun activities!”

Camper Jam 2017 in Golden B.C.

August 19, 2017

This is the other Camper Jam in Golden British Columbia. Western Canada is a great place to have a Volkswagen camper, meandering roads that head toward the Rocky Mountains etc. Golden is a pleasant town in the southeastern corner of the province near the B.C/Alberta border. This year has been particular bad for forest fires in B.C., but the air quality looked good at the event. Many Bay Window buses were in attendance. Credit and “thank you” to Milton Westy on YouTube for documenting the gathering so nicely.

International Couple Tour In ’73 VW Hightop Bus

August 5, 2017

I just found this couple on Youtube touring the States in their 1973 Hightop Volkswagen Bus. They are trying to do their bit for the environment  with things like vegan food, but their one weakness is the vintage VW, gas mileage can be as good as 25 MPG…with a tail wind. They seem to have at least one dog which must be a bit of a challenge. However, in the continental U.S. it is possible to follow the sun. Look for them on Youtube, channel name: Wandxr Bus

Jay Leno’s Garage – Gabriel Iglesias’ ’66 Samba Bus

March 16, 2015

It’s a great show, Jay Leno’s Garage on Youtube. I think he’s found his true calling mixing his passion for cars with his TV persona. Here we find comedian Gabriel Iglesias showing off his 1966 Volkswagen Samba. He recalls buying his first car, a similar bus in much worse shape than this one, for $700. Gabriel mentions the ’66 featured here is probably worth around $100,000! In my opinion, no car has appreciated so rapidly and so high as the Volkswagen bus of late. He asks Jay not to take it on the freeway, but he does anyway. The reason for his concern was a sloppy steering box, but he didn’t come out and say it. All went well and the two funny men wind up at a local L.A. eatery.

Unintroducing the Volkswagen Bus – Tribute Page, Stories Wanted

December 12, 2013

This new ad “Unintroducing the Volkswagen Bus” looks authentic, even if it isn’t it makes the point, the microbus is ending production in Brazil at the end of the month. A final 1200 limited edition vans will sell for about 26 thousand pounds or around USD $43,000.

There is also a tribute page soliciting personal stories about the iconic vehicle. Whether you call them Kombis or Combis, Westfalias, Bullis, Baywindows, Splits or Microbuses, Volkswagen Brazil wants you to check this page if only to read others’ contributions.

’79 Barn Find Bus Rides Again!

September 29, 2013

After those end of kombi production posts I needed something to cheer me up, and here it is.  A family of Volkswagen enthusiasts rescues what appears to be a 1979 Riveria and returns it to its former glory. Speaking from personal experience, when you get an old bus you tell yourself your going to a take it to a shop for some serious restoration. However, the best thing might be to clean it up and learn how to do as much as you can on your own like these folks did. Besides it’s fun. That original looking orange paint really comes back to life with some rubbing compound and a 2 stage wax.

Great VW Bus/Camper Cover

January 5, 2012

Unless you have a garage or carport you’ll probably be parking your bus outside. It’s sad to watch the elements wear down all your hard work to keep the old van in good condition for next season. Water and debris traps, like the gutters or luggage rack, are some of the worst. Enter the Deluxe Bus & Vanagon Cover which appears to originate from Just Kampers in the U.K. I love mine so much I bought a second for my project bus. Dirt seems to fall right off the material, and as it advertises, it breathes so you won’t get any moisture build up on your paint or inside the vehicle. The zippers for the side doors are truly useful, I often pop into the van to start it up or simply recover from winter Type II withdrawal. No sticky tree sap, bird droppings or dust, my Westfalia looks just like it did after I washed and covered it in the fall. I got mine at the BusDepot.
