Spotted: Bay Window Bus in an old Burger Chef Commercial

February 4, 2017

Burger who? It’s funny to think that this one time fast food giant was once serious competition for McDonald’s. My personal experience as a child, the food was so-so and the giveaways were fairly lame, but he restaurant buildings were very nicely designed. While the very last Burger Chef is said to have disappeared as late as 1996, this TV commercial looks to be  from 1971 the chain’s heyday in the early to mid 70s. A kids football team heads in to their local Burger Chef for some food after the game. Below, some screen capture highlights for VW van fans.

Danbury Still Has Last Edition Kombis!

January 17, 2017

It’s 2017 and I’m delirious with envy, who will end up buying these beauties? My buses keep me busy and I don’t have a spare forty-one thousand pounds lying around, but this would make a great get around vehicle, or maybe a wine tour bus…dreaming. Nice to look at the site and imagine. My Last Kombi thread is here.

Hasta Alaska Adventure hits Bureaucratic Snag

March 12, 2016

So close but so far away, I can’t believe this four year journey could be at an end. As Ben explains in this new video, U.S. immigration has denied him a tourist visa therefore preventing him from returning to Alaska to finish the trip in summer 2016. My only input is that since Ben’s dog Alaska and his travel companion are currently in Canada, he could join them and file for another U.S. tourist visa from Canada. This section from the U.S. Immigration site offers hope.

Wheeler Dealers search for a Kombi in Brazil

March 12, 2016

I can’t believe I missed this one. Here’s a promo for the British TV series Wheeler Dealers, this time they’re off to Brazil where the bay window bus was manufactured until the end of 2013, albeit from 2006 with a water-cooled engine. They’re in search of a bus to fix up with around $18,000 in their pocket. Now to find the full program.

Factory Television Presents – “My Van” featuring Martin

March 21, 2015

Factory Television is a video production house in the U.K. With a calling card like this YouTube exclusive they must be quite busy. One can really empathize with Martin and his desire to have one of the most iconic vehicles of all time, the Volkswagen camper van. There are other videos in the “My Van” series, well done.

New VW Van Documentary – “The Bus”

June 2, 2012

Just in time for summer, Damon Ristau has released his look at a cultural icon, and the overall magic that surrounds these vehicles. Certainly not the fastest or the most reliable they’ve plied roads worldwide for well over half a century. Most people have a Volkswagen bus story to relate, often to you the van owner as they walk toward you with a smile, “I had one of these once,” or “I was in a microbus and we all had to get out and push to make it up a steep hill.” The film is set to air on the Documentary Channel in the U.S. 8 PM Sunday July 29th 2012. Right now Ristau is touring with the film in North America. Here’s an article in the Vancouver Sun. Watch the trailers below.

LEGO introduces VW Camper Kit

August 15, 2011

How can you not love LEGO, or for that matter a VW bus. In this case the legendary toy maker has come up with a very accurate representation of a 1962 split window VW camper. With over 1300 pieces I imagine this would take a while to construct, after that you’d probably never want to take it apart again. Check out this official LEGO video featuring the toy van’s designer John-Henry Harris.
