Wheeler Dealers search for a Kombi in Brazil

March 12, 2016

I can’t believe I missed this one. Here’s a promo for the British TV series Wheeler Dealers, this time they’re off to Brazil where the bay window bus was manufactured until the end of 2013, albeit from 2006 with a water-cooled engine. They’re in search of a bus to fix up with around $18,000 in their pocket. Now to find the full program.

Glimmer Of Hope For Kombi

January 11, 2014

After reading through news sites around the world I’m still seeing mention of a possible return for Brazil’s Volkswagen Kombi into production after shutdown in December 2013. Perhaps they are simply aftershocks following Guido Mantega’s hopeful efforts to save the legendary vehicle. One interesting comment I’ve noticed a few times is: “The Kombi’s fate will be decided in the next few weeks” That would be now in the first few weeks of 2014, let’s keep our fingers crossed. Today’s video is from Youtube user rebuli marco and features a 54th anniversary Brazilian Kombi celebration from 2011.

Brazil Kombi Factory Floor Walk Through

January 3, 2014

VW Kombi The end of a motoring era.jpg

In this piece, which was filed back early December 2013, the BBC’s Wyre Davies laments the end of Kombi production. Some of the best shots I’ve seen of the factory floor where most of the work is done by hand. Since Volkswagen Brazil has nothing to replace it with they should have simply keep making our favourite vehicle. Click the photo to go to the video and article on the BBC site.

Last Air-Cooled Kombi on eBay

September 28, 2013

With the Last Edition Kombi (water-cooled) rolling off the line in Brazil at the end of 2013 I wondered what happened to the very last air-cooled model in 2005. Listed here as that vehicle, it’s being sold by Danbury Motorcaravans in the U.K. Asking the US equivalent of $72.000. This one is fully camperized and can be 2 toned with your colour of choice. Orange!
