Camper Jam 2017 in Golden B.C.

August 19, 2017

This is the other Camper Jam in Golden British Columbia. Western Canada is a great place to have a Volkswagen camper, meandering roads that head toward the Rocky Mountains etc. Golden is a pleasant town in the southeastern corner of the province near the B.C/Alberta border. This year has been particular bad for forest fires in B.C., but the air quality looked good at the event. Many Bay Window buses were in attendance. Credit and “thank you” to Milton Westy on YouTube for documenting the gathering so nicely.

International Couple Tour In ’73 VW Hightop Bus

August 5, 2017

I just found this couple on Youtube touring the States in their 1973 Hightop Volkswagen Bus. They are trying to do their bit for the environment  with things like vegan food, but their one weakness is the vintage VW, gas mileage can be as good as 25 MPG…with a tail wind. They seem to have at least one dog which must be a bit of a challenge. However, in the continental U.S. it is possible to follow the sun. Look for them on Youtube, channel name: Wandxr Bus

Jerry Seinfeld Spotlights a Westfalia

June 18, 2016

Jerry Seinfeld’s “new” show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is a simple concept and it works well, especially when he chooses a 1977 Volkswagen Westfalia as the vehicle for his comedy. Here he teams up with fellow comedian Jim Gaffigan in the camper juxtaposed with the streets of New York. It’s ironic that they both claim to prepare for their routines, yet this seems fairly natural and off the cuff. If you’re a fan of both Volkswagen campers and the long running TV sitcom Seinfeld then this is the video for you. Click the picture to watch.

Hasta Alaska – “You could not write this stuff”

June 3, 2016

Good news/bad news, Ben finally gets his U.S Visa! But…the Kombi is in a bit of a fix. From Vancouver to Haines Alaska, and now Whitehorse in the Yukon, the Kombi Life adventure continues. A must watch video in the series.

At first I thought, why is Fidel Castro putting out that fire? Maybe it’s just the angle, it is in fact Ben’s incredibly helpful friend in Haines who saved the bus just in time. And I really want one of these T-Shirts! You can support Kombi Life by purchasing one here.

Hasta Alaska Adventure hits Bureaucratic Snag

March 12, 2016

So close but so far away, I can’t believe this four year journey could be at an end. As Ben explains in this new video, U.S. immigration has denied him a tourist visa therefore preventing him from returning to Alaska to finish the trip in summer 2016. My only input is that since Ben’s dog Alaska and his travel companion are currently in Canada, he could join them and file for another U.S. tourist visa from Canada. This section from the U.S. Immigration site offers hope.

Kombi Life: British Columbia to Alberta Road Trip – Adventure Canada

July 25, 2015

I can’t stop watching this series. OK I’m biased, but the story is just as real and believable as the people are interesting an entertaining. Of course you want to find out what happens next week! It reminds me of old TV shows where the central character rides or drives into a new town each week with a subsequent cast of supporting characters. British Columbia is still something of the wild west, even so, trying to find a decent, safe, quiet, and free overnight parking spot can be a challenge. What luck as Ben and the Kombi Crew bump into a similar bay window bus and they end up camping together.

Kombi Life: Hasta Alaska on Vancouver Island (Canada)

July 17, 2015

Amazing to think this awesome video series is produced from inside the Volkswagen van they travel in. The sheer amount or stamina and perseverance is incredible, previously in the series the engine was out multiple times. While others would have given up Ben did not. He accepts donations to the cause, but says that a portion of the proceeds goes to charity. If you’re not at liberty to take your kombi on an extended adventure this is the next best thing. Check out their Youtube channel.
