Jerry Seinfeld Spotlights a Westfalia

June 18, 2016

CICGC-vwvan

Jerry Seinfeld’s “new” show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is a simple concept and it works well, especially when he chooses a 1977 Volkswagen Westfalia as the vehicle for his comedy. Here he teams up with fellow comedian Jim Gaffigan in the camper juxtaposed with the streets of New York. It’s ironic that they both claim to prepare for their routines, yet this seems fairly natural and off the cuff. If you’re a fan of both Volkswagen campers and the long running TV sitcom Seinfeld then this is the video for you. Click the picture to watch.

Hasta Alaska – “You could not write this stuff”

June 3, 2016

Good news/bad news, Ben finally gets his U.S Visa! But…the Kombi is in a bit of a fix. From Vancouver to Haines Alaska, and now Whitehorse in the Yukon, the Kombi Life adventure continues. A must watch video in the series.

At first I thought, why is Fidel Castro putting out that fire? Maybe it’s just the angle, it is in fact Ben’s incredibly helpful friend in Haines who saved the bus just in time. And I really want one of these T-Shirts! You can support Kombi Life by purchasing one here.

Hasta Alaska Adventure hits Bureaucratic Snag

March 12, 2016

So close but so far away, I can’t believe this four year journey could be at an end. As Ben explains in this new video, U.S. immigration has denied him a tourist visa therefore preventing him from returning to Alaska to finish the trip in summer 2016. My only input is that since Ben’s dog Alaska and his travel companion are currently in Canada, he could join them and file for another U.S. tourist visa from Canada. This section from the U.S. Immigration site offers hope.

Kombi Life: British Columbia to Alberta Road Trip – Adventure Canada

July 25, 2015

I can’t stop watching this series. OK I’m biased, but the story is just as real and believable as the people are interesting an entertaining. Of course you want to find out what happens next week! It reminds me of old TV shows where the central character rides or drives into a new town each week with a subsequent cast of supporting characters. British Columbia is still something of the wild west, even so, trying to find a decent, safe, quiet, and free overnight parking spot can be a challenge. What luck as Ben and the Kombi Crew bump into a similar bay window bus and they end up camping together.

Kombi Life: Hasta Alaska on Vancouver Island (Canada)

July 17, 2015

Amazing to think this awesome video series is produced from inside the Volkswagen van they travel in. The sheer amount or stamina and perseverance is incredible, previously in the series the engine was out multiple times. While others would have given up Ben did not. He accepts donations to the cause, but says that a portion of the proceeds goes to charity. If you’re not at liberty to take your kombi on an extended adventure this is the next best thing. Check out their Youtube channel.

Kombi Life: Hasta Alaska the Journey Continues

June 29, 2015

If you’re into Volkswagen buses or epic trips, you might have come across Hasta Alaska A.K.A. Kombi Life which is operated by a fellow from Jersey in the Channel Islands. His name is Ben and not only has he been traveling from Chile to Alaska for the past 3 years in a rather unique 1992 Brazilian VW bus, but he’s also found a novel way to make it all the more interesting. Anyone can apply to join the “Kombi Crew” providing there is room. So people have come and gone along the way supplying only their company, food, gas money, and general help, which in some cases has led to engine rebuilds and a nice paint job. One of the most amazing things is the great production quality of the video series, and I mean everything, technically it’s awesome, the editing is superb, and the concise and candid narrative keeps you glued to the screen. Traveling and meeting new friends can have its pitfalls, and in this recent vlog Ben recounts bittersweet memories of Sharne the spirited Australian girl who he ended up falling in love with before she had to return home. They say work is the best tonic, in this case Ben says travel, and he’s right. He got back up on his proverbial horse (read Kombi) and rode on to new adventures. The current version of the Hasta Alaska team led by Ben last heard from in Qualicum Beach Vancouver Island, Canada.

Camper Jam Canada 2014 Moved due to Forest Fire

July 17, 2014

camperjamcanadalogo

Canada has a VW Camper Jam, though much smaller than its British brother the same spirit is there. What could be better than touring through the Canadian Rockies in a Volkswagen camper?  Unfortunately a forest fire necessitated the event to be moved to another location also located in Alberta Canada. This message was on their webpage.

“Due to a forest fire in the area, We are scrambling to find a location for the 2014 Jam. We have a few potential spots lined up we are waiting to hear confirmation. For more up to date information Stay connected through our social media channels or if you have any questions click here

Later according to the group’s Facebook page Camper Jam was successfully moved to Drumheller, Alberta. Great events like that are always too short. Never enough time to meet everyone and check out every vehicle.
